Biography

Barack Hussein Obama II is the 44th and current President of the United States, 
having taken office in 2009. He is the first African American to hold the office.
 Obama previously served as a United States senator from Illinois, from January 
2005 until he resigned following his election to the presidency in November 2008.

Early life:
Obama was born on August 4, 1961, at Kapi?olani Maternity & Gynecological Hospital
 in Honolulu, Hawaii, the first President to have been born in Hawaii. His mother, 
Stanley Ann Dunham, was born in Wichita, Kansas.Of mostly English descent, her 
family also traces to Germany and Ireland, his great-great-great grandfather was
 born in County Offaly. His father, Barack Obama, Sr., was a Luo from Nyang'oma 
Kogelo, Nyanza Province, Kenya. Obama's parents met in 1960 in a Russian language 
class at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where his father was a foreign student
 on scholarship. The couple married on February 2, 1961, separated when Obama Sr. 
went to Harvard University on scholarship, and divorced in 1964. Obama Sr. remarried
 and returned to Kenya, visiting Barack in Hawaii only once, in 1971. He died in an 
automobile accident in 1982.

Marriage and family:
In a 2006 interview, Obama highlighted the diversity of his extended family: "It's 
like a little mini-United Nations", he said. "I've got relatives who look like 
Bernie Mac, and I've got relatives who look like Margaret Thatcher."Obama has seven 
half-siblings from his Kenyan father's family – six of them living – and a
 half-sister with whom he was raised, Maya Soetoro-Ng, the daughter of his mother 
and her Indonesian second husband.Obama's mother was survived by her Kansas-born 
mother, Madelyn Dunham, until her death on November 2, 2008, two days before his 
election to the Presidency. In Dreams from My Father, Obama ties his mother's 
family history to possible Native American ancestors and distant relatives of 
Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States of America during the 
American Civil War.Obama's great-uncle served in the 89th Division that overran
 Ohrdruf, the first of the Nazi concentration camps to be liberated by U.S. troops
 during World War II.

Bo becomes an Obama
Three months after becoming President of the United States, Barack Obama completed
 his largest campaign promise -- he gave his daughters Sasha and Malia a puppy. 

Bo, a black and white Portuguese Water Dog moved into the White House on April 14, 2009,
 officially becoming "First Dog." 

Bo was given to the Obama family by Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, who had a "Portie" of his own. 
The dog, which is hypoallergenic (Malia is allergic), was born and bred in the distinctly 
"red" state of Texas.

Pets and Politics
Not quite a mongrel: Before receiving Bo, President Obama was famously quoted saying," Our
 preference would be to get a shelter dog, but, obviously a lot of shelter dogs are mutts 
like me."
